Simple Changes #32
Offer deaf awareness training and British Sign Language (BSL) training for your staff, particularly for those on the front line
Problem
Around 575,000 people in Wales are deaf or have hearing loss – as much as the populations of Cardiff and Swansea combined. Many deaf people face health inequalities and are more likely to experience poor mental well-being. Staff in public bodies with no connection to the deaf community may not appreciate that BSL is many deaf people’s first language and that they may have received inadequate support at school when it comes to the English language. BSL is a huge part of this group’s culture and identity.
Simple Change
By offering training to your front-line staff, you are working towards a more equal and inclusive society by ensuring everyone can access the services they need.
