Speaking about this year’s Royal Welsh Show Derek Walker, Future Generations Commissioner for Wales said,

“Food is critical to the health of our people and our planet.

“One of my biggest focuses so far as Future Generations Commissioner for Wales is to push for a national food strategy.

“We’re starting to see a way forward for food policy in Wales – but there’s a long way to go.

I welcome Welsh Government’s Food Matters publication, published during the Royal Welsh Show, which is outlining for the first time how cross-government food policy supports Wales’ well-being goals.

Now I urge ministers to set a direction of travel for food, involving people, industry and farmers.

We need a long-term strategy that sets out how everyone in Wales can access healthy, affordable and sustainable food.

The Food, Farming, Countryside Commission’s Food Conversation shows the Welsh public want access to healthier food and restrictions on ultra-processed foods.

Cardiff Council passed a motion to redouble its efforts on food poverty and calls for a Welsh food strategy. Six councils are now supporting the Welsh Veg in Schools programme connecting local organic growers with free school meals.

I will continue to support Welsh Government and local authorities in shaping national and local food plans which are good for people, nature and future generations.” #CymruCan
