Statement: Everyone has the right to live in peace – Future Generations Commissioner for Wales, Derek Walker, supports call for humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza

“The daily death rate in Gaza is now higher than any other major 21st century conflict, according to Oxfam.

More than 100 days since the horrific Hamas attacks that killed 1,139 people in Israel, and Israel’s military campaign that is, say Oxfam, killing on average 250 Palestinians every day, with a death toll at more than 23,000, this is a humanitarian catastrophe. UN human rights experts warned yesterday (January 16) that Gazans now make up 80 per cent of all people facing famine or catastrophic hunger worldwide, “marking an unparalleled humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip”.

Wales is a globally responsible nation and a nation of sanctuary; and as a guardian of the interests of future generations I support calls for an end to the suffering of all civilians, for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and for the immediate release of all hostages.

Everyone has the right to live in peace, now and in the future.”
