Simple Changes #11
Manage road verges and connected green spaces (such as spaces around buildings) for wildflowers and pollination
Problem
Wild flower meadows, one of the rarest habitats in the UK, have declined by 97% since the 1930s. This loss has contributed towards a serious decline in flower-rich areas that are vital habitats for many insect and bird species. The loss of this important habitat has resulted in the decline of more than two thirds of UK pollinators
Simple Change
By managing roadsides and other green spaces better, you can restore and expand wildflower habitat, providing shelter and food for pollinators and other insects whilst enhancing the contact with nature experienced by users of Britain’s road network.
Case Study
Who is doing this?
Don’t cut the grass
Natural Resources Wales’ office in Maes y ffynnon stopped cutting the grass in order to let bio-diversity flourish, and it reduced their costs too! Pete Frost and Tristan Hatton-Ellis told us why they decided to do it, and how you can implement it in your public body.
